My vision for this piece was to portray the traditional Irish Claddagh Ring in a kind of surrealist painting. Instead of replicating an actual Claddagh ring, I chose to surround the iconic heart-shape with a realistic crown and actual human hands. I was somewhat inspired by Dali's "Meditative Rose." I love his use of color and symbolic elements and how they are used in dream-like, illusionistic way, as well as how his work warps our perception. A generations old symbol, the crown of the ring represents loyalty, the heart is love, and the hands are friendship. The ring has many meanings regarding the way it is worn, its actually really interesting to read about, but this is my interpretation I guess
. There is a little quote that goes with the ring: "With these hands I give you my heart and crown it with my love."
Oil on canvas.
