The Steadfast Tin Soldier

Description

My favorite segment from Fantasia 2000 thousand, of course, is The Steadfast Tin Soldier. Derived from Hans Christian Anderson's somewhat more melancholy tale about a one-legged soldier, who falls in love with a beautiful ballerina, and bravely returns to her after being separated by an evil Jack-in-the-Box, does not end happily. Disney never disappoints, however, and gives us all the happy ending we want. The music, the animation, and the interpretation of the story is beautiful and I really wanted to capture that in a drawing. When the soldier first sets eyes on the ballerina, she has one leg in the air in a dance pose, and he believes that like him, she has lost a limb. When he realizes she has 2 legs, he is downcast, but she sees beyond his complication and finds a kindred spirit. Starting last year, I began a tradition of doing an illustration for my family's Christmas card, and for some reason this segment of Fantasia 2000 kept returning to me, and I decided to rework it (which wasn't difficult at all) and give it a Christmas theme, hence the bells, presents, holly, and mistletoe. Coincidentally enough, I've been wanting to enter the contest at :icondisney-club: for "Disney Shorts"- so it was a win-win- I hope you enjoy it! ( --> results are in, and I got 3rd place :D! )

I would love to make this a full-length movie of The Steadfast Tin Soldier, renaming it Tin Soldier.
